How to make COMPOST at home | ksplanting

Here you can see the easiest method to make compost in home using the kitchen waste.

To prepare nutrient rich manure you need

1. Egg shells:

They are primarily made of calcium carbonate which helps the plants to develop a strong cellular structure. It also contains potassium.

2. Neem Leaves:

They are rich in vitamins, minerals and also helps increase the resistance to attack pest.

3. Garden soil:

Soil keeps the bad smell away and it will fasten the composting process.

4. Banana peels:

It will add potassium as well as small amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and magnesium to the compost.

5. Green kitchen waste:

The best kitchen scraps to add to your compost pile are those fruit and vegetables craps because they break down easily and do not attract rodents and insects. They are high in nitrogen and helps to activate the breakdown process.


Preparation:

Take any container from bucket to garden pot as per your requirement. Make sure that the container has a drainage hole in it and a shallow tray to collect the drain water from compost container.

  • Layer the bottom the container with dried leaves and then add 1 inch of garden soil.

  • Add the kitchen plant waste. Add a layer of Egg shell and then a layer of neem leaves.

  • In order to help compost break down faster, shred kitchen waste since it takes longer for larger pieces to break down, this will speed up the time it takes to make compost.

  • You can also add wood chips, coco peat also.

  • Repeat the process and add multiple layers of waste.

  • Then finally add a layer of garden soil which will keeps the bad smell away.

  • Water them thoroughly. Use the drained water for plants.

Place the container in the shade of sun keep them for atleast 30 days. Whenever the soil seems dried add water. It is a good idea to mix your compost on a regular basis as it helps to encourage the growth of the right kind of bacteria that will help the compost to decompose faster. Cover it with dry leaves as it will maintains the moisture.


After a month, the compost will be ready. You can store it in dry place away from sunlight. Making compost correctly will allow you to feed your plants essential nutrients and make your oil more fertile, all while using items that would otherwise go into trash.


Don’ts:

  • Do not add citrus fruits like lemon or orange.

  • Do not add salted or cooked vegetables.

  • Do not add fish or meat waste.

  • Do not add sugar to the compost.

  • Strictly avoid salted food waste.
