In this blog I had shared all the information about growing cauliflower in containers from seed to harvest. Cauliflower is sun loving and cool season crop.
Potting mix:
We can use potting mix consisting of 50% garden soil and 50% manure.
Seedlings:
Always choose good quality seeds to get good harvest.
Sprinkle the seeds over the soil mix surface.
Then cover them with thin layer of soil and gently tap the soil.
Seeds will normally start to germinate after 7-8 days.
Watering:
Water well with gentle shower.
Make sure not to displace the seeds.
Keep the soil moist not wet during germination phase.
Location:
Keep the pot in full sun.
Cauliflower requires 5-6 hours of sunlight.
Planting:
When the seedlings are 3-5 inch tall or have 3-4 leaves, you can transfer to final position.
Transfer them gently to avoid transfer shock.
Take a container of diameter 20 inches and depth 10 inches and fill them with mix.
Make sure they have sufficient drainage holes.
Plant 2 seedling in it. Do not over crowd.
Support:
They need excess nutrients when they mature.
So add organic manure 15 days once.
Cauliflower plants require about 60-80 days to mature properly.
After 45 days, the leaves will grow about the size of hand.
Make sure every plant get enough sunlight.
Cut the large leaves to avoid shade.
Check if there is any visible signs of plants.
If any use neem oil to control it.
Harvest:
After 60 days, the cauliflower will grow.
When the head becomes 2-3 inch diameter cover them with leaves. It is called blanching.
It will avoid the color change and reduction in tenderness.
After 85-90 days, when they become 6-8 inch in diameter, cauliflower is ready to harvest.
