Seed potatoes:
Always use seed potatoes with eyes. They are available in the local nurseries or at gardening centers.
Take some potatoes and place them in a paper bag.
After few days, they will start to sprout.
Container & soil mix:
Select a big container of 20-25 inch diameter and 18-20 inch depth for planting.
Make sure that the container contains some drainage holes.
Potato grow well in light and nutrient rich soil. So, take mixture of 60% garden soil and 40% compost.
Fill the pot with 4 to 6 inches of soil and lightly pat with hands.
Planting:
Plant 4-5 seed potatoes in the pot. Do not over crowd the pot.
Make sure the potatoes are not touching each other or the edge of the pot.
Cover them with 2-3 inches of soil.
Water the soil and make them moist.
condition:
Place the pot where it can receive direct sunlight for 6-8 hours a day.
Keep the soil moist but not wet. if the soil is dry, the plant will die. If the soil is wet, the plant will rot.
Maintenance:
After 6-7 days, sprouts will appear.
When the plant have grown 6-8 inches, add couple inches of soil to the pot for support.
Repeat the process, when the plant grows in height.
For every 25 days add manure to the soil.
Harvest:
After 110-120 days, the plants turn yellow and dried up.
It is the best time to harvest the potatoes.
While you harvest, You may see many small potatoes. They are very sweet in taste and good to chew.
