Here you can know how to grow tomatoes in home from tomato. In this blog I have explained all the stages in growing a tomato from seed to harvest:
Seed to plant:
Take some fresh tomatoes and cut them into slices or use fresh seeds.
Take a small pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill it with the potting mix
Place the slices on the surface of the potting mix. You can remove the tomato flesh to avoid any fungus growth.
Lightly cover with soil and pat down lightly. Water well.
Keep the pot in the partial shade. When the seeds start to germinate, move them into sunlight.
Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination phase.
When the seedlings are 6-8 inches tall transfer them to the separate pot.
Planting:
For final transplant choose a container or a pot that is atleast 20 inches in diameter and 15 inches deep.
Fill the pot with the potting mix. Make sure to make holes in the pot for drainage.
Take the plant out of the seeding part. Make sure not to disturb the roots during transfer.
Be careful when lifting the plant out of its original container or you could damage the roots.
Dig holes about 7 inches and place the plant in the hole. Remove the leaves and branches below the soil line.
Tomatoes must be planted deeply. Deep planting encourages healthy and strong root system.
Water the seedlings immediately after transplanting for letting them settle well.
Thoroughly water whenever the top layer of soil is dry.
After transplanting keep the pot in partial shade for 2 days to let the plant recover from transplant shock.
Gradually expose the plant to the sun.
Tomato plant need 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day to grow and eventually produce fruit.
Support:
As tomato plants need support to grow, insert a long stick in the soil close to plants.
Tie the stems with the stick loosely with the thread.
Pollination:
Tomato flowers are typically pollinated by wind and sometimes by insects.
Due to lack of air movement in home natural pollination may slow down.
So to increase the pollination tingle the flowers gently or shake the flowers to disturb the pollen grains.
Pest control:
Tomato plants will produce fruit between 40-60 days after planting.
Fertilize the soil 10 days once to ensure the growth.
Spray the plants after every 6-8 days with homemade organic pesticide made from neem, garlic and chillies.
Harvest:
After 85 days the tomatoes will become bigger and heavier. So provide some additional support.
Check the plant daily, once they began to ripe gently twist the fruit and avoid pulling at the vine.
Nicely ripened fruit will be in nice red colour.
