Here you can get to know about growing garlic in containers at home. I will share all the needed information on growing garlic. Garlic is typically grown in early winter. Garlic take 6-7 months to grow fully.
Pot & growing medium:
Choose a medium sized pot or container with 20-25 inch diameter and 6-8 inch depth.
Make sure that container has drainage holes.
Cover the holes With gravel stones for better drainage.
Garlic grows well in nutrient rich soil. Hence, take a mix of 40% garden soil and 60% organic compost.
Mix the well and fill it in the container. Tap them gently.
Planting:
Take some fresh garlic bulbs and place them in a poly bag.
Sprinkle little water on them and place it in the shade.
After four to five days, new shoots will emerge from the cloves.
At this stage, they can be planted in the soil.
Gently separate out the cloves. Choose the fat and healthy cloves for planting.
Make 1-2 inch deep holes in soil and places the cloves as the green end point upwards.
Then cover them with the soil.
The larger clove forms big healthier garlic bulb.
Keep atleast 3-4 inch gap between each clove for better growth.
Watering & position:
During the first month, keep the soil moist all the time. Do not over water.
Place them in the direct sunlight where it can receive 5-6 hours of sunlight.
Support:
Remove any unwanted plants or weeds from the container.
they will suck essential nutrients from the soil.
They also stop the growth of garlic.
For every 20 days add some organic fertilizer to the soil.
Garlic requires more amount of nitrogen for growth.
Immediately water the soil after adding fertilizer.
Harvest:
After 6-7 months, the top leaves dry out when the bulbs are mature enough.
When the soil is dry, loosen the soil and take them out of the soil.
Usage & storage:
Carefully remove the soil and let them dry in airy, shady spot for 2 weeks.
Once the garlic bulb is dry they are ready to use and store
They should be stored in dry place. Don’t store in moist place.
